About Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp

The only luxury camp located inside Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, where mountain gorillas occasionally wander through camp — an experience found nowhere else on Earth.

Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp holds the extraordinary distinction of being the only luxury accommodation situated within the boundaries of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to roughly half of the world's remaining mountain gorillas. This means that gorillas are not merely neighbors; they are occasional visitors who wander through camp, an experience so rare and profound that it regularly reduces seasoned travelers to tears. The camp's eight spacious canvas-and-wood tents are elevated on platforms within the ancient montane forest, surrounded by a cathedral of towering trees festooned with moss, orchids, and ferns. Each tent features king-size beds with goose-down duvets, en-suite bathrooms with hot water showers, writing desks, and a private veranda where guests can sit quietly and listen to the forest's extraordinary soundscape — the deep hooting of colobus monkeys, the call of the great blue turaco, and the gentle rustle of unseen creatures in the undergrowth. The communal dining tent and lounge are connected by raised wooden walkways that weave through the forest canopy, creating an immersive treehouse-like experience. The chef prepares hearty three-course dinners designed to restore energy after the physical demands of gorilla trekking, using fresh ingredients supplemented by produce from the camp's partnership with neighboring Batwa and Bakiga farming communities. Gorilla trekking from Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp begins directly from the camp, eliminating the long drives required from properties outside the park. Guides from the Uganda Wildlife Authority lead small groups through the impenetrable undergrowth, tracking habituated gorilla families through a labyrinth of bamboo, vines, and ancient trees. The moment you sit quietly among a gorilla family — watching a silverback gently play with an infant while mothers groom in the dappled light — is universally described as life-changing.

Wildlife

Bwindi is home to approximately 460 mountain gorillas in 19 habituated families. The forest also shelters 120 mammal species including L'Hoest's monkey, red-tailed monkey, black-and-white colobus, giant forest hog, and forest elephant. Over 350 bird species include 23 Albertine Rift endemics such as the African green broadbill and Shelley's crimsonwing.

Best Time to Visit

Gorilla trekking operates year-round. The dry seasons of June to August and December to February offer the driest conditions for trekking, though the forest remains damp year-round. The wet season can make trails more challenging but also brings fewer visitors and lush, photogenic conditions.
