About Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge

Eight stone-and-thatch cottages perched at the highest point of Nkuringo ridge, with volcano views and direct access to gorilla trekking in Bwindi's southern sector.

Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge sits majestically at the highest point of the Nkuringo ridge, commanding panoramic views across the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest to the distant volcanic peaks of the Virunga chain that straddle the borders of Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. At 2,200 meters elevation, the lodge frequently rises above the cloud line, offering guests the surreal experience of watching clouds fill the valleys below as the sun rises over the mountains. The lodge's eight individual stone-and-thatch cottages are built from locally quarried volcanic rock and timber, each with its own character and view. Interiors are designed for mountain comfort — thick stone walls retain warmth, fireplaces crackle through cool evenings, and beds are piled with woolen blankets and hot water bottles. En-suite bathrooms feature claw-foot bathtubs where guests can soak while gazing at the volcano panorama through picture windows. Clouds is a community-owned lodge, meaning that revenue from every guest's stay flows directly to the Nkuringo community, funding schools, healthcare, and conservation initiatives that protect the forest and its gorillas. This model has transformed the community's relationship with the forest from one of exploitation to guardianship, and guests can visit community projects to see the tangible impact of their stay. Gorilla trekking from Nkuringo is renowned for its adventurous quality — the trail descends steeply through terraced farmland and into the thick forest below, an experience that rewards the physically fit with intimate encounters in one of Bwindi's less-visited sectors. The lodge also offers access to the Batwa Trail, a deeply moving cultural experience led by former forest-dwelling Batwa pygmies who share their ancestral knowledge of the forest.
