About andBeyond Phinda Private Game Reserve

Six distinct lodges across a 28,000-hectare private reserve featuring seven diverse ecosystems, pioneering conservation, and exceptional Big Five viewing.

andBeyond Phinda Private Game Reserve is a pioneering conservation success story set across 28,000 hectares of reclaimed farmland in KwaZulu-Natal, now home to one of the most biodiverse private reserves in southern Africa. What makes Phinda truly exceptional is its seven distinct ecosystems — from sand forest and coastal bushveld to palm savannah and wetlands — compressed into a single reserve, creating a visual and ecological diversity unmatched by almost any other property on the continent. The reserve operates six distinct lodges, each designed to complement its unique setting. Mountain Lodge perches on a hilltop with panoramic views. Forest Lodge features glass-walled suites on stilts within the rare sand forest canopy. Vlei Lodge overlooks a wetland teeming with birdlife. Rock Lodge is carved into a cliff face with infinity pools. Homestead is a private-use villa for families. Zuka Lodge offers exclusive-use bush living for small groups. Phinda's guiding philosophy is rooted in what andBeyond calls the 'three Cs' — conservation, community, and commerce. The reserve was created in the 1990s through the acquisition and rehabilitation of degraded pineapple and cattle farms, and the subsequent reintroduction of all Big Five species along with cheetah, wild dog, and numerous other species. Today, Phinda's conservation team leads cutting-edge projects including black rhino tracking, cheetah research, and marine turtle monitoring on the nearby iSimangaliso coast. The reserve's proximity to the Indian Ocean coast allows for unique safari-beach combinations. Morning game drives tracking leopards through sand forest can be followed by afternoon snorkeling on the coral reefs of Sodwana Bay or a boat cruise through the iSimangaliso Wetland Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — where hippos, crocodiles, and Africa's largest breeding colony of loggerhead turtles reside.

Dining Experience

Each lodge offers its own culinary personality. Dining ranges from boma dinners under the stars to elegant indoor affairs, with menus featuring fresh seasonal produce, Zulu-inspired dishes, and seafood from the KwaZulu-Natal coast. Phinda's wine lists highlight top South African estates. Bush picnics and sundowner cocktails are daily rituals.

Activities & Experiences

Activities include Big Five game drives, guided bush walks, black rhino tracking on foot, ocean safari extensions to Sodwana Bay, scuba diving and snorkeling, iSimangaliso boat cruises, marine turtle monitoring (seasonal), community visits, conservation experiences, and Zulu cultural excursions.

Wildlife

All Big Five species roam the reserve, with exceptional leopard and cheetah viewing. African wild dogs are regularly sighted, and the black rhino population is one of the most important in southern Africa. The reserve's seven ecosystems support over 436 bird species, nyala antelope, suni, and red duiker in the sand forest, and hippos, crocodiles, and whale sharks on the nearby coast.

Best Time to Visit

Phinda offers year-round game viewing. The dry winter months (May–September) provide the best Big Five viewing with sparse vegetation. Summer (October–March) brings lush green landscapes, baby animals, migrant birds, and warm Indian Ocean temperatures perfect for the beach extension. Marine turtle nesting season runs from November to March.
