About Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve

A Relais & Chateaux wilderness reserve in the ancient Cederberg Mountains, protecting over 130 San rock art sites among dramatic sandstone formations.

Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve & Wellness Retreat is a Relais & Chateaux property set within 7,500 hectares of pristine Cederberg wilderness, approximately three hours north of Cape Town. This is a landscape of extraordinary antiquity — weathered sandstone formations, crystal-clear pools, and over 130 San (Bushman) rock art sites dating back thousands of years, making it one of the most significant open-air galleries of ancient art on the African continent. The lodge offers sixteen rooms spread across the historic manor house and freestanding riverside lodges, each designed with understated elegance that allows the surrounding landscape to take center stage. Riverside lodges feature private verandas overlooking the Boontjies River, outdoor showers, fireplaces, and heated plunge pools. The manor rooms exude colonial charm with four-poster beds, Persian rugs, and antique furnishings. Every room comes with a complimentary minibar and locally made botanical amenities. The reserve's wellness program is among the most comprehensive in southern Africa, with an extensive spa menu, open-air treatment pavilions beside the river, yoga sessions, and a natural rock swimming pool. The kitchen has earned awards for its farm-to-fork cuisine, with much of the produce grown in the lodge's own gardens. The wine list focuses on Cederberg and Cape vintages, and private dinners in the open-air boma are accompanied by traditional Cape cuisine and local storytelling. Guided heritage walks to the San rock art sites are the signature experience, led by knowledgeable guides who decode the ancient paintings and their spiritual significance. The reserve also supports a range of wildlife including Cape mountain zebra, bontebok, red hartebeest, Cape leopard (elusive but resident), and over 160 bird species including the majestic Verreaux's eagle. Nature drives, canoeing, fly fishing, mountain biking, and stargazing complete an activity program that appeals to both the adventurous and the contemplative.
