About Acacia Farm Lodge

A charming lodge set on a working coffee plantation in Karatu, the gateway to the Ngorongoro Crater, blending farm-to-table dining with safari adventure.

Acacia Farm Lodge is a verdant retreat nestled on a thriving coffee and flower plantation in the lush highlands of Karatu, positioned as the ideal gateway to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the wider northern Tanzania safari circuit. The lodge's forty rooms are scattered across meticulously landscaped gardens, each designed with locally sourced stone and timber to complement the surrounding farmland. Accommodations range from cozy standard rooms to spacious plantation suites, all featuring hand-crafted furniture by Tanzanian woodworkers, vibrant African textiles, and private balconies overlooking the coffee fields or the distant Ngorongoro highlands. Bathrooms are finished in natural stone with rain showers and organic bath products sourced from a local women's cooperative. The heart of Acacia Farm Lodge is its celebrated farm-to-table restaurant, where the chef crafts menus around produce harvested from the lodge's own organic gardens, supplemented by locally roasted coffee and honey from on-site apiaries. Guests are invited to join the morning coffee harvest, learning the art of hand-picking and processing Arabica beans, or to explore the flower nurseries that supply blooms to European markets. The lodge's elevated location provides sweeping views across the Great Rift Valley escarpment, and its proximity to Ngorongoro Crater — just a 20-minute drive to the rim — makes it the perfect base for early morning crater descents. Guided walks through the surrounding Iraqw farmland reveal a rich cultural tapestry, while the lodge pool offers a welcome respite after a dusty day on safari.

Activities & Experiences

Activities include guided coffee plantation tours, organic garden walks, Ngorongoro Crater day trips, cultural visits to Iraqw communities, mountain biking, bird watching, and cooking classes with the lodge chef. The lodge also arranges excursions to Lake Manyara and Tarangire.

Wildlife

The nearby Ngorongoro Crater is home to approximately 25,000 large animals including the Big Five. The crater floor hosts one of the densest lion populations in Africa, along with black rhino, flamingos on the soda lake, and large buffalo herds. The surrounding highlands are home to elephant, bushbuck, and over 200 bird species.

Best Time to Visit

The Ngorongoro Crater offers excellent year-round game viewing. The dry season from June to October delivers the clearest skies and best wildlife concentrations on the crater floor. The green season from November to May brings fewer visitors, lush landscapes, and the calving season.
